The Gold Dome Multicultural Society, located at 1112 NW 23rd Street, will host a reception as part of the Día de los Muertos art exhibit opening on Thursday, October 22nd in the historic Gold Dome building.
This exhibit will consist of altars made by area students from participating schools including: US Grant High School, Linwood A+ Elementary, Fillmore Elementary, Classen School for Advanced Studies, Martin Luther King, Edwards, Dunbar, Webster Middle School, Lee Elementary, Britton Elementary, Buchanan Elementary, Ja ckson Middle School, and Heronville.
During the Mexican holiday Día de los Muertos, participants create altars to remember the passing of loved ones. This is not a mournful commemoration but a happy and colorful celebration where death takes a lively friendly expression. A typical altar is decorated by photographs, possessions of deceased loved one, marigold flowers, and edible sugar skulls. The official holiday occurs on November 1st and 2nd.
Frank Lopez will provide live Mariachi music. Refreshments will include Mexican pastries. There will be a cash bar. The gallery hours, for the duration of this exhibit, are Tuesdays 11am-5pm, Thursdays 11am-7pm, Fridays 11am-3pm, Saturdays 11am-3pm, and Sundays 1pm-4pm. The exhibit will remain open until Thursday November 5th. This event is free and open to the public. Families with children are welcome.
